Cognitive Preference and Clinical Experience: The Relationship between Student Nurse Anesthetists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Thinking Styles

The study examined the cognitive preferences of Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in relation to their clinical experience. Results showed that both groups have a preference for rational decision-making. There was no significant relationship between years of clinical experience and cognitive preference, and no significant difference between SRNAs and CRNAs in terms of cognitive preferences. The dominant cognitive preference identified was rational cognition, while experiential thinking preference remained constant with increased experience. This knowledge contributes to understanding CRNAs' decision-making processes and provides insights for SRNA education and CRNA development.<br /><br />The research aimed to explore cognitive preferences, examine the relationship between cognitive preference and clinical experience, and identify differences in cognitive preferences between SRNAs and CRNAs. Results showed that both groups have a dominant preference for rational decision-making. The study utilized the Rational Experiential Inventory-40 to assess cognitive styles. The study's theoretical framework incorporated Benner's Model of Skill Acquisition and Cognitive Experiential Theory.<br /><br />The findings suggest that understanding cognitive preferences and decision-making processes is crucial for nurse anesthesia providers. Recognizing cognitive biases and utilizing strategies to mitigate errors is essential for effective decision-making in healthcare settings. The study highlights the importance of aligning rational and experiential thinking in making clinical decisions. Further research is recommended to evaluate decision-making processes during anesthesia and to explore the role of personality traits and motivation in cognitive preferences.
